Why do we eat CHRISTMAS CAKE?
These rich fruit cakes were a sensible celebratory food as they didn't spoil quickly, and could therefore be made in advance to have in ready for guests whenever they arrived, or could be taken on a journey to give as a gift, in days when travelling was a slow process. The fruitcake as we know it today evolved from plum cake recipes in England.

Each child is helped to take an orange (representing the World) and insert four cocktail sticks into it (representing the four seasons). Fruit, nuts and sweets can then be attached to the cocktail sticks to represent the fruits of the Earth. A red ribbon is then tied around the centre of the orange as a reminder that Christ died for us all. Finally, a small lighted candle is placed on top to symbolise Jesus Christ, Light of the World.

What is CHRISTINGLE?
The first Christingle service was held in Marienborn in Moravia in 1747, when the pastor, John de Wattville, wanting to find a new way of telling the Christmas story to children, gave each child a lighted candle tied with a red ribbon. He asked them to relight them at home and place them in their windows to show the Light of Christ to passers by. The tradition was kept alive by the Moravian church and in the United Kingdom was adopted by the Children's Society in the 1950s as a way of raising awareness of their work. Many churches and schools now hold Christingle services any time from Advent to the end of the Epiphany season.

By the late medieval period the singing of Christmas carols had become a tradition. St Francis of Assisi (around 1220AD) promoted the use of carols to spread the Christmas message by translating songs sung in Latin into languages spoken by ordinary people in Europe for use in formal church services.

Why do we sing CAROLS at Christmas?
Singing to and about their gods was part of all pagan festivals, including the winter ones. When Christmas was established on the 25th December in the fourth century, the church initially tried to stop people singing these pagan songs, but then changed track, and decided to encourage the singing of Christian Christmas themed songs in their place.

Why are CANDLES a Christmas symbol?
Because Jesus is the "light of the world"! In the pre-Christian mid-winter festivals sun gods were worshipped, and the candles were a symbol of the needed light of the sun.

What is BOXING DAY?
In medieval times, the day after Christmas churches used to distribute the money that had been collected in the "almsbox" (charity box) to the poor and needy. This evolved into the tradition of giving tradesmen a "box", meaning a gift or money, on the first day of the week after Christmas.

Shepherds leave by door at back of stage. A group of people are to sing “Silent Night”. While this is going on kids need to sneak onto stage quietly and set up nativity scene behind screens. When they are sorted, need stage hands to move screens away. Shepherds re-enter church by side door and go back up the steps on to the stage when “Silent Night” finishes.
Shepherd 1: Look! Here he is, just as the angel said!
Shepherds fall on their knees again to worship at manger.
Shepherd 1: Thank you Lord for sending our Messiah, thank you Lord for sharing him with us, thank you Lord, thank you!
Shepherd 2: [jumping up] We can’t keep this to ourselves, we should tell everyone!
Shepherd 1 is nodding in enthusiastic agreement. Shepherd 1 goes down stairs on the left,
Shepherd 2 goes down stairs on the right, go down either aisle saying - in an excited manner- the following directly to individuals seated there:
Shepherd 1: Christ the Lord is born!
Shepherd 2: An angel came to us and said we would find baby Christ in a manger in Bethlehem and we did!
Shepherd 1: Good news for everyone! The Messiah is born! He is here with us now!
Shepherd 2: The Messiah is here!
Then Shepherds rush back up aisles and exit by the side door, saying on their way out:
Shepherd 1: Praise God!
Shepherd 2: Thank you Lord!

Angel appears above middle screen as spot light is turned on, shepherds fall to their knees, turning away and covering their faces in fear
Shepherds: Aaah!!!
Angel: Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people. Yes! All people, even you. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord!
Shepherd 1: [putting hand up cautiously] Um, excuse me your bright shineyness…Are you sure you’ve got the right address? It’s just that we’re um…we’re just shepherds – [pointing to Shepherd 2] he’s not even a very good shepherd! It wouldn’t be the first time we’ve been delivered someone else’s message by mistake…
Angel: [checking note in hand] To the shepherds watching their flock by night, first hill east of Bethlehem…that’s you isn’t it?
Shepherd 2: Er, yes…
Angel: There you go then! [regaining composure] God has chosen you to be among the first to see the new born king. Go see him for yourselves. He’s your Saviour. And this will be a sign to you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger
Sudden burst of choral music representing host of angels: “Glory to God in the highest! And peace on earth, Glory to God, glory to God, glory to God in the highest! And peace on earth, Good will towards men, towards men, goodwill towards men, Glory to God, Glory to God in the highest!” etc etc (from Chorus 17, Handel’s Messiah).
Spot light turned off, angel disappears. Shepherd1 jumps up, looks at Shepherd 2 still on his knees in a dazed state
Shepherd 1: Come on! Let’s get to Bethlehem and see for ourselves this amazing thing the Lord has let us in on!

Shepherds Go To Bethlehem
(Luke 2:8-20)
Two or three screens will have to be moved centre stage, with a step ladder hidden behind for the angel to go up! (and later, the kids can set up their nativity scene behind the screens too). Two shepherds on stage one on the left, one on the right, facing half in to talk to each other and half to the congregation. Shepherd 2 miming doing a head count, pointing to each sheep in turn
Shepherd 2: 83, 84, 85…
Shepherd 1: Finished the head count?
Shepherd 2: How can I count them properly if they won’t stand still?!
Shepherd 1: Call yourself a professional! Get organised!
Shepherd 2: Is that number 86 or 87? They all look the same to me!
Shepherd 1: “Ample experience of shepherding” you said on your application…
Shepherd 2: Will you stop milling about! I don’t know what’s the matter with this lot tonight, they’re so restless
Shepherd 1: Let me do it! 1, 2, 3, 4, 5….

What does the ADVENT WREATH represent?
The circle of the wreath reminds Chrisitans of God, His eternity and endless mercy, which has no beginning or end. The green of the wreath speaks of the hope that Chrisitans have in God, the hope of newness, of renewal, of eternal life. Candles symbolise the light of God coming into the world through the birth of His son, Jesus

Where do our Christmas traditions come from?
Why do we have ADVENT CALENDARS?
They were designed to help children focus on the coming of Jesus by having a "window" to open each day from December 1st to December 24th with a picture behind it of something related to the nativity. "Jesse Trees" were used in this way too - see Christmas Decorations and Christmas Tress. But modern day Advent Calendars are often a countdown to Christmas devoid of anything to do with Jesus, and instead have pictures of cartoon charaters and contain chocolates.

The nativity play was invented to teach people about the birth of Jesus in an entertaining and easy to understand way and really helped with the Christianisation of the 25th December. Displacing the winter songs that were traditionally sung in public with carols telling stories with Christian Christmas themes was also effective in spreading the message of Jesus, especially after Francis of Assissi had some translated out of Latin into languages spoken by the average person!

The name "Christmas", taken from the Latin for "Mass of Christ", wasn't used in Britain until around 1043AD. As Christmas began to rival Easter as the most important Christian festival an extended period of preparation was added to the church calendar called "Advent" (taken from the Latin for "arrival").

These festivals included the use of incense, candles and decorating buildings with evergreens, gift giving, feasting and drinking. The church wanted to Christianise these practises, either to cover-over the fact that pagan religions were still out-stripping Christianity in popularity, or as a genuine attempt to win people over to Jesus.

Also, we know that it is very unlikely Jesus was born in December because in the story of his birth given in the Bible it talks about sheep out on the open hillside and Mary and Joseph travelling to sign a census, things that would not take place in the wet and cold Judean winter months.

It is not known when exactly Jesus was born - not the day, or the month, or even the year! There have been several big changes made to how dates were recorded throughout history, and as a result of these confusions we now calculate that Jesus was born sometime between 7 and 4 BC ("before Christ"!).

What About Christmas?
Logically, it would make sense if Christmas had existed since the birth of Jesus, or at least since the resurrection of Jesus and the founding of the early Christian church. But, oh no! That would be far too easy! The first Christians didn't celebrate the birthday of Jesus; birthdays weren't considered a big deal in Jewish or early Christian culture.

Meanwhile, after the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus in 30AD, the "new" controversial religion, Christianity, spread to Asia Minor, Greece and to Rome, and so through the Roman Empire, largely as a result of persecuted Christians having to flee Jerusalem. As Christians were killed for preaching about Jesus and standing up for their beliefs, those surviving chose to commemorate the death of these martyrs or saints by celebrating "martyrs days" or "saints days".

They also left out treats, like cakes, as a peace offering. When the Romans came to Britain (successfully in 43AD after failed attempts in 55BC and 54BC) they added the traditions of their own harvest festival, "Pomona", to Samhain, such as bobbing for apples in water barrels and putting nuts in the fire to watch where they jump to.

The Druids (Celtic priests) also believed that on this day (exactly between the Autumnal Equinox and the Winter Solstice) the barriers between the human and supernatural worlds were broken, allowing demons, witches and lost souls to harass the living and play tricks on them. People tried to protect themselves from attack by disguising themselves as witches, devils and ghosts, and carved grotesque faces in things like pumpkins, which they kept illuminated by candlelight, to ward off evil spirits.

I feel grateful and positive, strong and defiant, weak and helpless, sad and remorseful. There is room in music to be honest with my God and let down the guard that I’ve constructed to hide my heart from all the pain in this world. And there is room for God to come to meet me and talk to me as if there were no one else around...

Maybe it captures the nostalgia of your youth when you were invincible, eternally young and carefree. Even it might remind you of a tragic event in your life, a moment that shaped you irrevocably and although it brings back all those dark feelings and tears there is somehow a peace and a healing in the process. This doesn’t sound very religious does it? God gave man the gift of music for a specific purpose I’m sure.

Music has a very unique significance throughout the world in that it permeates every single nation and culture. I’ve yet to find a society where music does not exist in some form or other. It clearly has the power to draw communities together but also has a transcendental quality that reaches outside of the normal and the mundane. If you’re not sure what I’m talking about just think about ‘that special song’. Maybe it was playing the first time you fell in love, the first time you saw Eve in all her glorious beauty (or Adam riding to the rescue in his shining armour).

Worship Through Music
My name is Richie and I often lead the music side of things for RPC. I am lucky because my job is to play the guitar and sing loudly both of which I really enjoy doing. I am privileged to work with the keyboard talents of Aerin, way beyond her years in ability, Mike on vocals and brass who has a natural gift for harmony and the soaring melodies of Marilyn and Sarah on vocals.

The date was chosen on purpose to rival Samhain and involved similar traditions, including dressing up as a saint, an angel or a devil and joining a parade, with the aim of weaning people off of the pagan festival. By the 9th century, Samhain traditions were still going strong, so the church tried to take-over the evening of the 31st of October itself by making it another feast day, "All Hallows Even" (evening) and this and Samhain (remember, it's pronounced something like "sow-een") merged to become "Halloween".

These were usually local festivals, though the martyrdom of some of the apostles were more widely celebrated. Pope Gregory III (731-741AD) decided to have one day a year in the church calendar to celebrate all the martyrs or saints, instead of lots of different regional saint's days, and this was set as the 1st of November, and known as the "Feast of All Saints" or "All Saint's Day" or "All Hallows Day" ("hallow" is an old English word for saint or holy person).

We believe....The Bible to be the only infallible authoritative word of God...That there is only one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.... In the Deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, His virgin birth, His sinless life, His miracles, the authority of His teachings, His work of atonement through His vicarious death and His bodily resurrection, His ascension to the right hand of the Father, His present intercession for His people, and His personal return in power and Glory to judge both the living and the dead....

History
RPC started life as a house fellowship in Richmond Park Avenue (hence the name) in 1981. This was in the days of charismatic renewal in this country when many house fellowships sprung up, God began drawing people into the fellowship and baptising them in his Holy Spirit. From the early days the church was called to be a "church in the community" reaching people with the gospel and bringing the kingdom of God into the area through lives submitted to the Lordship of Christ.

Disability Access: The Richmond Park Church building is accessible by wheelchair, including the back rooms where prayer meetings and Sunday School are held, but there are no disabled toilet facilities other than a support rail in one of the usual size cubicles in both the gents and ladies toilets. As the Sunday evening Prayer Meeting is usually accessed by the side door (up a few steps) we would need to know in advance if wheelchair access is needed, or else you could telephone from a mobile phone when you arrive, so that the front door can be opened for you.

What About Funerals?
Once all the paperwork following a death has been sorted, there are no legal requirements regarding the form of the funeral ceremony itself, so friends and relatives are free to organise to say their goodbyes as they see fit or in accordance with the wishes of the deceased.

Sometimes a couple choose to have the Registrar come to the church to have both these parts in one service; alternatively, a couple could get married at the Registry Office, or somewhere else entirely, and then have a separate wedding blessing service at the church itself.

What About Weddings?
In England, if you have your wedding in an Anglican church (ie. Church of England) or in a church which is registered to conduct weddings without a Registrar present the minister or vicar acts on behalf of the state and can take you through the whole marriage ceremony. But if you have your wedding in a church which isn’t registered a Registrar from the local council has to be responsible for the legal side of getting married.

As we believe that baptism is something that should follow making a personal choice to become a Christian, we don't believe in baptising (or christening) babies, as babies can't make that choice for themselves. However, we do believe in dedicating babies to the Lord. A short dedication ceremony usually takes place as part of our Morning Worship. Just like at a christening, the parents promise before God and the church to bring their child up in Christian ways, and the church promises to support them in this.

Getting baptised and taking communion are two things we are instructed to do in the Bible which are symbolic, but also more than that. God chooses to use our obedience in going through these actions to communicate with us on a profound spiritual level as well. The religious terminology for things like these are "sacraments".

To us, baptism by full immersion in water symbolises dying to the "old self" (your life when you were separated from God by sin and not spiritually connected to God) and being re-born as a "new creation" (you now have God's Spirit alive in you and your sins have been forgiven).

Soon after Jesus' resurrection, one of the disciples, Peter, addresses a crowd of people in Jerusalem, preaching to them about Jesus being their Saviour. The people understand his explanation and ask him "what shall we do?". Peter replies: "Repent and be baptised, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins" (Acts 2: 37-38).

Going to church doesn't make you a Christian, not even if you've gone to church every Sunday since the day you were born! You can only become a Christian by personally choosing to invite Jesus into your life as your Lord and Saviour. As a Christian, spending time with God on your own (in Bible study and prayer and quiet thought) is important as you get to know someone better if you spend some quality one-to-one time with them. But church is important too.

If you're not already a Christian you may want to go to church to see what Christians get up to there, and soak in the atmosphere of the singing, praying and teaching from the Bible.

Where's Baby Jesus?
Written by Michelle Fogg
Title: Where's Baby Jesus?
Summary: This sketch is set backstage where 3 people dressed in classic nativity play outfits (Shepherd with a tea towel on his head, Wise Man with a paper crown, and an Angel with wings and a tinsel halo) are about to take part in a nativty play. But they have mislaid the Baby Jesus doll. Will anything do as a substitute for Jesus?

Feel free to adapt the scripts to best suit your drama group; most of the sketches are light-hearted and straight-forward, and you needn't worry if you end up with women playing male roles - if a woman actor stands up and introduces herself as John the Baptist or Joshua, the audience will roll with it!
Enjoy!

The puppet song lyrics were written in the early days of puppetry at Richmond Park Church when we were using two orange felt mouths with eyes and floppy ears, only distinguishable from each other as one had a pretty blue bow! That puppet is called Happy, and has the fresh, bright, enthusiastic personality of Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music. Her bubbliness and joy is counter-balanced by Mopy, who's a bit skeptical and naughty, and sings in an out of tune sort of squeaky Lancastrian accent! Hence the format in the songs of the two bouncing off each other, but you can make of them what you will!
