Deaf Awareness

Richmond Park Church is pleased to have two BSL (British Sign Language for the deaf) signers in our church who interpret for our deaf members during Sunday Morning Worship, once a month when all the Care Groups meet together in the church, and at Geof & Jan's (Boscombe East) Care Group.

What About Funerals?

Once all the paperwork following a death has been sorted, there are no legal requirements regarding the form of the funeral ceremony itself, so friends and relatives are free to organise to say their goodbyes as they see fit or in accordance with the wishes of the deceased.

Sometimes a couple choose to have the Registrar come to the church to have both these parts in one service; alternatively, a couple could get married at the Registry Office, or somewhere else entirely, and then have a separate wedding blessing service at the church itself.

So although Richmond Park Church is registered as a "building of worship" where marriages can take place, a Registrar from Bournemouth Council has to be present to make sure the couple are asked the required questions as part of the ceremony, before our pastor can lead the blessing of a marriage.

What About Weddings?

In England, if you have your wedding in an Anglican church (ie. Church of England) or in a church which is registered to conduct weddings without a Registrar present the minister or vicar acts on behalf of the state and can take you through the whole marriage ceremony. But if you have your wedding in a church which isn’t registered a Registrar from the local council has to be responsible for the legal side of getting married.

As we believe that baptism is something that should follow making a personal choice to become a Christian, we don't believe in baptising (or christening) babies, as babies can't make that choice for themselves. However, we do believe in dedicating babies to the Lord. A short dedication ceremony usually takes place as part of our Morning Worship. Just like at a christening, the parents promise before God and the church to bring their child up in Christian ways, and the church promises to support them in this.

Getting baptised and taking communion are two things we are instructed to do in the Bible which are symbolic, but also more than that. God chooses to use our obedience in going through these actions to communicate with us on a profound spiritual level as well. The religious terminology for things like these are "sacraments".

To us, baptism by full immersion in water symbolises dying to the "old self" (your life when you were separated from God by sin and not spiritually connected to God) and being re-born as a "new creation" (you now have God's Spirit alive in you and your sins have been forgiven).

Soon after Jesus' resurrection, one of the disciples, Peter, addresses a crowd of people in Jerusalem, preaching to them about Jesus being their Saviour. The people understand his explanation and ask him "what shall we do?". Peter replies: "Repent and be baptised, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins" (Acts 2: 37-38).

What About Christenings and Baptism?

At Richmond Park Church people get baptised after they have made their own decision to invite Jesus into their life (ie become a Christian), as a personal and public confirmation of their faith, in accordance to what we believe the Bible teaches on baptism.

Also, to share our (or rather God’s) idea of setting up a dedicated student group at Richmond Park Church, the Drama Group are thinking of touring around local Christian Unions and putting on a short sketch aimed at students and encouraging them to come along to Richmond Park Church. If you or you know someone who organises a local Christian Union and you would like us to come along to your meeting and perform this sketch for you, then please let us know.

Club Chaplain

Jon Oliver is the local Club Chaplain for the Bournemouth area. Him and his team go round the streets of Bournemouth’s nightclubs and bars chatting to people, helping people home safely, praying for people, etc. They are also always on the lookout for more volunteers to join their team.
